Click2Pay was a Germany based online payment system owned and operated by Wire Card. The company was founded in 2003, with its head office now based in Berlin. The system was effectively an e-wallet, with account holders funding their e-wallet via their usual bank current account or credit card account. This information was checked by the removal of a small sum from the account, which was later refunded. Once authorised and registered, new account holders were provided with a special Personal Account Number (PAN) and a transaction code which they could use to make payments online. The initial spending limits on the card were low, but these could be increased as a transaction history was built up, enabling every day and substantial payments to be made. After a period of satisfactory operation, customers could apply for a “Virtual” Visa card, which enabled the card to be used more widely, wherever the Visa card was accepted online.

Click2Pay was very popular with German and Russian customers, although the service was available worldwide, and was regularly used by online gamers for funding their online casino and bingo payments. This was particularly the case in North America, where the Canadian and US governments made it difficult for their citizens to make payments to online gambling companies through a considerable tightening of the legal framework. While players across the Atlantic had a limited choice of payment methods, there were soon plenty of alternatives to choose from in Europe. But this side of the pond, the service was hampered by the difficulty and inconvenience of withdrawing winnings from gaming sites. Many sites did not permit payments to Click2Pay accounts, and there was often a charge for doing so. Given that there was also an additional charge for withdrawing funds from the customer’s Click2Pay account too, it was best to ensure withdrawals were made into the players’ personal bank accounts.
The relatively expensive service and the arrival of more convenient and better value rivals meant that the days of Click2Pay were eventually numbered, and the service was eventually closed around ten years after its original introduction, in late 2014. By this time, few customers remained so the withdrawal of the service caused few difficulties.
Nowadays, there are far more convenient and less expensive ways to make your online payments. There are still several different e-payment methods available, and almost all online bingo sites offer some kind of e-payment or pre-payment option.
